Cameron Cooper celebrated his one-year anniversary at Coffs Harbour Toyota with a ride in Hyundai’s luxury V6 Genesis.
The 27-year-old was born with spina bifida, sight in only one eye and has spent his life in a wheelchair. He has overcome a number of barriers in making his administration assistant position his own and adding value to the service team at Toyota/Hyundai.
Warren Skinner, dealer principal, is proud to have given Cameron his first-ever pay cheque.
“Cameron’s a great lad who performs a very important and much appreciated role for us in managing our service invoices and making sure they’re accurately stored when we get audited,” Mr Skinner said.
Cameron’s role has evolved since he started at Coffs Harbour Toyota and with Key Employment’s assistance, a number of government-funded workplace modifications were made available to him.
“On the advice of an occupational therapist, we adapted Cameron’s work station to better suit him in his wheelchair. The improvements not only make it more comfortable for him, but allow him to be more productive and efficient in his job,” Key Employment’s Ian Davie said.
For Cameron it’s been a 12 months he’s loved as much as his anniversary reward.
“It was fantastic to be taken out on the highway and travel in style and I’m happy to have that perk to my job which makes clearing the piles of invoices worthwhile,” Cameron said of the celebratory ride.
“Now I don’t think I am below anybody. I feel different from what I used to believe. I am treated like an equal individual and my opinions are listened to with respect and courtesy.”
“Key Employment has changed my life by getting me a job and helping me start my career. They check on my progress regularly and are always there to offer support if I need it.”
“If it wasn’t for Key Employment I wouldn’t have the job I have now. I would not have had the confidence to apply for the job I did or do well in the interviews if it wasn’t for them. Key Employment isn’t scary! Just sign up with them and they will help you find a full-time or part-time job.”
“Key contact me or the boss regularly and make sure I don’t need anything to maintain my job.”
“I like KAPOW a lot because it’s good to learn new things and gain knowledge. It’s also good because you make friends with the trainers and other kids.”
